Student engaged in a violent protest at the UKZN Westville campus on Wednesday, despite management and students reaching an agreement to return to class.

Video footage of protestors setting a building on the campus on fire and private security shooting at protestors in response has emerged on social media.

Reports indicate that at least two vehicles and a number of guard houses have been damaged.

The administration of the university announced the academic programme would resume on Wednesday after two days of “intense engagement” between the university leaders and student representatives.

During the protest, the group of students set alight a motorbike, quadbike and also managed to set the institutions’ building alight, but it was partially burned as the fire was quickly extinguished.

Gwala said a case of public violence has been opened for investigation.

“No injuries were reported and no arrests have been made.”
