Operations at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) were brought to a standstill as lecturers, cleaners and security staff are on strike leaving its 22,000 students in the lurch ahead of mid-year exams.
At least nine council members are said to have resigned since October. The head of the council, Tebogo Hlapalosa, revealed that even the highest university council couldn’t make decisions including that to increase salaries due to having too few members to meet the legal requirements to make decisions.
According to VUT statute, a legal act, there should be 31 council members and of those, 60% must be external.
SRC president Wandile Maluleke confirmed the strike saying he wishes for the strike to be resolved so students can go back to school since exams begin on June 14.
