The University of Johannesburg’s savoured it’s first win of the 2019 Varsity Cup season, playing against WITS at UJ Stadium on Monday 5th March evening.
WITS took the loss end for the second time around as this was it’s second loss in five matches, although it looked promising in the first-half, UJ held on leading 17-0 at halftime.
WITS tried to power through in the 52nd minute with a try by Adrian van Blerk, and shortly afterwards, a seven-point run-in from Kasende Kapepula which took them within striking range of UJ at 20-16.
Two penalty kicks, followed by a converted try, saw UJ picking up the score, with only five minutes to go, a converted five-pointer by Adriaan Bester put UJ in the lead securing a victory at the end of the game.
