The Department of Science and Technology hosted the Intellectual Property (IP) creators Awards to honour various institutions and individuals who contribute towards combating issues of poverty, unemployment and inequality.

South Africa is without a doubt a country with an abundance of resources, yet growth is sluggish. This is what researchers are working towards combating.

The DST works towards supporting the development, implementation and adoption of researcher’s technologies more effectively, by allowing the identification of promising technologies that may have potential and deserve further support.

Amongst the honoured researchers based at universities, technikons and Science Councils here in South africa, were those researchers who through their generated IP’s work towards finding new ways for individuals to have access to medical care and in finding solutions to medical treatments, including early detection of medical conditions.

“We are celebrating a host of innovators, mostly South Africans but also individuals coming from all walks of life. We are celebrating people who have made a difference through their creation of minds, whether it is through human settlements, health or food security “, Said Mmboneni Muofhe, Deputy Director General of DST.

“We thrive for a South Africa that is prosperous, free from poverty, a South Africa that has dealt completely with all forms of inequality and which is inclusive through innovation”, Said Muofhe
