The South African Liberated Public Sector Workers’ Union (Salipswu), founded at Rhodes. The union also declared itself a non-politically aligned union.

SALIPSWU is reported to be affiliated with the South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU)

Based on its principles, the union has set itself to “always stay preoccupied with the struggle for worker control and ownership” and “endeavoring for quality”.

At the launch current SRC President of the University, Samkelo Mngadi stated that the union strives to take issues of the students as their own, making reference to powerful protests like Fees Must Fall as an example of positive change on varsity campuses.
