Taking that coronavirus cases have risen in the past weeks, one would think that the safety of students would come first. The Nelson Mandela University has shunned requests to shutdown academic activities amidst rise in Covid-19 cases.
The University has vowed to continue with academic activities, stating that all classes, tests, laboratory sessions, practicals and experiential learning activities will continue as normal.
“As the week of 16 March is the start of our second term, students are encouraged to make a special effort to attend all academic activities”
This decision taken by the university has received backlash, starting a petition for the university to follow steps of other universities and suspend classes.
As of 7am on Monday, it was repsorted that a total of 6000 people have signed a petition.
