Higher education institutions have been working around the clock to ensure that students keep up with academic activities. Institutions were shut down due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus putting academic activities on halt.
The Witwatersrand (Wits), University of Johannesburg (UJ), University of Pretoria (UP), Stellenbosch University and University of Cape Town (UCT) are among the institutions which will resume remote online teaching and learning from Monday 20 April.
In preparation for this shift, institutions have working on contingency plans to accommodate learners so that remote learning can be achieved.
HOW UNIVERSITIES ARE GETTING READY
Wits University said it has put additional measures in place to address the challenges faced by students, such as the lack of access to devices and data by students. A contingency plan includes providing students with laptops.
The university’s Mobile Computing Bank enables qualifying students without access to appropriate mobile learning devices to loan basic devices from the bank.
The university has also reached an agreement with telecommunications service providers – Telkom, MTN, Vodacom and Cell C – to zero-rate its library and learning management sites from 15 April.
To ensure that students are equipped the University of Johannesburg ensured that “infrastructure, learning resources and interactive systems are aligned to a mobile-rich educational environment”, spokesperson Herman Esterhuizen said.
The University of Pretoria has a Solidarity fund which will assist with purchasing laptops for students in need. The university is also engaging with a broadcaster to see how it can make use of available channels for teaching and learning.
The University of Cape Town is conducting surveys to access the challenges which students may have in order for the institution to know which student needs it should cater for.
