The North-West University is the 2019 Varsity Hockey champions. This was after the teams had to take it to a penalty shootout since no goals were made in the normal time. The NMU savored a victory and won the final with a score against the determined Maties 2-1.
The match started off with the NWU being faced with an opportunity to take lead, however, Charné Maddocks, couldn’t lock in that contact at close range, enough to secure a goal.
After the first quarter, the score was still locked at 0-0, and both teams went two went to half-time keeping it at a score of 0-0.
In the third quarter, both teams couldn’t break the draw, as both sides were still square. Maties won a penalty corner in the 54th minute and NWU’s Kirsty Adams and Clarise Smit managed to score for the visitors while captain, Paige Phillips, was the only one to convert her penalty effort.
This is what Maddocks had to say to SuperSport’s Fiso Mazibuko at the post-match presentation, “We put in the hard yards we have been hard at work since the 14th of January already so I think the hard yards have paid off. I am super proud that we actually made it through to the final and yes, may the best team have won.”
