The department of Tourism together with the Culture, Art, Tourism, Hospitality, and Sport Sector Education and Training Authority (CATHSSETA) and the North West Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism launched the National Tourism Careers Expo(NTCE) 2019 in North West.
With this year’s target being 5000 learners, the NTCE aims to bridge the information gap between the industry, government, educators, learners and training authorities within the tourism industry. Creating a South Africa where the youth are skilled to take on the workforce through proper and essential training.
The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Mr. Fish Mahlalela also shed light on the dire unemployment issues faced by South African youth.
” The rate of young people that are unemployed is unacceptable. We sitting on close to 11 million people who are unemployed, it’s a time ticking bomb.”
He explained the government’s need to implement short term intervention strategies which will enable unemployment rates to decrease greatly in a short space of time.
This year the NTCE 2019 will run from the 19-21 September at the ROYAL Marang Hotel, the focus will on offering platforms such as Chef’s platform, Barristers and Mixology platform, Hospitality platform and the responsible Tourism platform.
Those learners between Grade 9-12, FET college students, unemployed graduates and university students are encouraged to partake in this programme.
A lot of the youth are constantly being absorbed by these training programmes however, most of them still question the success and measures put in place to ensure that these programmes are successful enough to yield high and sufficient employment rates.
The Deparment promises to turn this around through it’s contribution to ensure that through growth and training the youth are able to see the great benefit of the implemented programmes.
