The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) has appointed its first female central SRC president.
Marking her place as the first female student president, Phinda Swartbooi looks to challenge existing struggles for women to break the patriarchal barrier into positions of leadership.
The aim is to prioritise and put issues relating to Gender-Based Violence (GBV), the safety of students on and around campus, and equal education at the forefront.
For Phinda, taking up this position means that, “there is hope for women on campus because they face many issues including GVB” She said.
CPUT spokesperson Lauren Kansley said: “We believe her appointment shows the maturity and growth of our student populace and is a step in the right direction.”
“We trust she will also open the doors for other female student leaders and continue making our spaces more female-friendly.”
