Youth unemployment has been one of the pressing issues in South Africa and now at the top of the national agenda, the Entrepreneurship Development in Higher Education (EDHE) programme is one which stands out as a solution-grooming and supporting graduate and student entrepreneurship.

The EDHE programme together with Universities South Africa and the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation has put forward an initiative that encourages entrepreneurial thinking and ensuring that entrepreneurship is embraced as a career choice for the young.

The EDHE in collaboration with the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation through the Entrepreneurship Intervarsity aims to be effective across the 26 public universities in South Africa and has recently launched the first national Entrepreneurship Intervarsity competition, where students are presented with an opportunity to bring forth their business ideas which will, in turn, be supported through investments and yield into lucrative and sustainable businesses.

The EDHE states that “the competition will consist of three rounds, the internal round is at a level of each participating university, the regional round is where winners identified per institution will compete to enter the national round, which is the final stage of the competition. The national finals will take place on 18th and 19th September.”

The EDHE works together with the Department of Higher Education and Training and Allan Gray Orbis Foundation to groom future leaders and creating a South Africa where youth become contributors to economic growth and job creation.
