For the first time, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) will be a co-organiser of the University of Oxford’s Media Policy Summer Institute, along with the Annenberg School at the University of Pennsylvania. The 2019 Media Policy Summer Institute will be held from August 4-17, 2019.
The new partnership with UJ will provide a platform for international engagement adding greater diversity and broaden the experience which will benefit the Institute’s curriculum.
The five themes of the 2019 Institute include:
Extreme speech and hate speech online;
Biometric technology in vulnerable populations;
Innovative efforts to extend the internet and connect the unconnected;
Algorithmic bias and inequality online;
Internet shutdowns.
These themes will allow participants to have a greater understanding of how these issues influence, and are influenced by, laws and regulations governing the media and communication technologies in diverse contexts and jurisdictions.
