Many students were displaced due to the lack of funds to pay for accommodation, the City of Tsawa has seems to have come up with solutions to curb this long-standing problem.
The City of Tshwane has decided to take action by offering its derelict buildings, which they will turn into student residences. This was shared by Executive Mayor Stevens Mokgalapa during last Thursday’s council sitting at Tshwane House.
Proving solutions to the outcry of students over the shortage of accommodation is the priority, he said.
Mohale said the initiative would assist the City to deal with dilapidated buildings, which posed health hazards to the lives of people. This will be achieved through the signing of a lease agreement with private bidders. This will allow them to take over the development of the buildings.
“The proposal to private bidders would contain data from the universities regarding the number of students in need of accommodation,” he said.
The City is said to take on the responsibilities with the roll-out of infrastructures, including water and electricity into those buildings.
The issue of Accommodation was at the heart of protests at the Tshwane University of Technology last month.
